ALLIANCE: Part 3 - Katherine Roarty

Katherine Roarty, Enforced ArchKatherine Roarty has such incredible strength and charisma. It's exhilarating to see someone with such poise on stage especially because there is nothing this young lady can not do! ALLIANCE, Enforced ArchOn April 6th and 7th, Enforced Arch is presenting their latest work, ‘ALLIANCE’ Art & Activism, which features past and current pieces by creative directors James Koroni and Tracey Katof. Katherine Roarty is a member of this project and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join us on this adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask her a few questions…

Enforced Arch: How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

Katherine Roarty: Nothing is more honest than the relationship to another person in space. The touch of another human can cure the most fatal of illnesses. I want to heighten the awareness of our own power. We can change our world with just the touch of our hand. Reach out.

EA: What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

KR: The "in between" moments of this rehearsal process are what most inspired me. The people involved with the project are not only talented but they are the definition of conscious citizens. Whether it be animal activism or teaching herbalism, these dancers spread their awareness from their fingertips and beyond. Most inspiring quality of these dancers, however, is their friendships that have created throughout this process.

EA: What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

KR: People are what matter, whether they be family, friends or a furry critter. Support what and who you believe in. Stay in a present state of mind and the rest will follow.

ALLIANCE: Part 2 - Charles A. Desgagnes

Charles Alexis Desgagnes, Enforced Arch Charles Alexis Desgagnes' artistry is beyond human. Every imaginable character or subject he is asked to experience through movement shines because his dauntless personality breaths life into every step.

ALLIANCE, Enforced ArchOn April 6th and 7th, Enforced Arch is presenting their latest work, ‘ALLIANCE’ Art & Activism, which features past and current pieces by creative directors James Koroni and Tracey Katof. Charles Alexis Desgagnes is a member of this project and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him join us on this adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask him a few questions…

Enforced Arch: How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

Charles Alexis Desgagnes: Simple, I commit myself each day to always be a more compassionate and a less judgmental human being than the day before. I love being out of my comfort zone, as I truly feel it is the easiest, fastest and most rewarding way to grow. Dance is my 6th sense, my way to evoke thoughts and feelings as well as a tool to project concepts to other living matter that can't be told in any other way. I look forward to share and connect with my brothers and sisters around the world, using dance, art and activism as vehicles to distribute positive energy.

EA: What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

CAD: Arriving later in the process, I truly enjoyed being part of the EA family right away, I felt quite at home in this eclectic group. I appreciate the intellectual and artistic process behind 'ALLIANCE' as movements are not only pretty movements but also representations of something else, something touchable, something palpable for the audience as well as the dancers. The social themes exploited, should it be animal welfare or the place of males in our society, are more than ever relevant and Enforced Arch does an amazing job at pointing them out.

EA: What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

CAD: If there is one thing I learned in the last year is that even with all those amazing social opportunities at the tip of our fingers nowadays, people tend to disconnect the connection, in the sense that we easily forget that everything on this Earth is connected, humans, animals and plants. We are all one. People notice opportunities offered to them to engage in more social matters but sometimes toss them away by fear, ignorance or judgment. We need to let go of these negative patterns and reeducate our mind, spirit and bodies. Moving forward together, in the same direction, is the only way to do it. As a relatively new vegan, I also would like to share the immense feeling that comes from contributing to something useful in this world. It is truly the easiest and quickest way for anybody to really have a tangible positive effect on this planet and the creatures inhabiting it.

ALLIANCE: Part 1 - Lauren Cox

Lauren Cox, ALLIANCE, Enforced Arch Meet Lauren Cox, an intelligent, talented and compassionate soul. The loving energy she brings to every rehearsal and performance is electrifying!

ALLIANCE, Enforced ArchOn April 6th and 7th, Enforced Arch is presenting their latest work, 'ALLIANCE' Art & Activism, which features past and current pieces by creative directors James Koroni and Tracey Katof. Lauren Cox is a member of this project and we couldn't be more thrilled to have her join us on this unforgettable adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask her a few questions...

Enforced Arch: How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

Lauren Cox: By simply living as a consciously healthy mind, body and soul.  I am a strong believer in leading by example and so by feeding myself knowledge, compassion and acceptance I can offer others the same thing.  There are so many issues in today's world, if we all took full advantage of our time, space and experience our similarities and needs would be more important than our differences.  I choose to act through art by telling a story and being honest and committed.

EA: What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

LC: I am constantly impressed by Tracey and James' abilities to express the emotions of others.  The entire process was insightful and causes you to think beyond your own experience and thoughts.  It takes you to other space entirely, sending you on a journey that each time digs deeper.

My favorite part of this process is being able to discuss these issues with my fellow dancers so we can collectively use that as a driving force.

EA: What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

LC: How deeply rooted animal cruelty is in our society, or even the mistreatment of our Earth.  When you think you've edited out your own negative influence on your surroundings there is something more to do.  It can be overwhelming but as long as you are making an effort to be aware of all sides you are of good ole' positive change.

Tonya Kay with Neil Patrick Harris

Tonya Kay, Neil Patrick Harris Here we have our talented 'Mover' Tonya Kay in a hilarious sketch with Neil Patrick Harris at the 38th Annual People's Choice Awards.

I'm always impressed with her range of performance abilities. What can't she do!? She's a dancer, a model, a burlesque goddess, a danger expert, an actress and now she's doing sketch comedy with the stars! Well, she's a star too and I say, "Do not stop Tonya Kay, I love it!" If she wasn't so amazing I'd tell her to join the same 12 Step program as Neil Patrick Harris.

Watch the video, you'll see what I mean:

Grant's Safari

Grant's Safari, Enforced Arch 'Grant's Safari' is a multi media movement performance presented by Javanna Productions' M.O.V.E. For Autism (M4A). For the launching of Autism awareness month, Javanna Productions' dancers will use movement to explore the mind of an autistic child. In 2005, Grant Johnson was diagnosed with Autism. Mover Nicole Johnson (19), Choreographer and Creative Director, is using the fascinating elements of her brother's disability to create a one hour hip-hop and contemporary movement piece. Despite his disorder, Grant Johnson (12) has a profound talent for naming and recognizing wild and exotic animals. Therefore, 'Grant's Safari' will be narrated by Grant Johnson himself.

On March 31st the dancers will serve as Grant's safari and he will serve as the audience's guide. The proceeds of this event will be donated to Autism Speaks and QSAC (Quality Services For The Autism Community). President of Autism Speaks, Mark Roithmayr and general manager of QSAC (Quality Services For The Autism Community) Jason B. Schmidt, are proud supporters of these teen dancers and their past socially responsible performances.

Javanna Productions' M.O.V.E. For Autism was established in New York city by choreographer and NYU sophomore Nicole Javanna Johnson. In efforts to raise funds and awareness for her brother's disability, Nicole Johnson produced the first of many M.O.V.E. For Autism Showcases in the Spring of 2009. Since then, the company has raised over $15,000 for larger non-profit organizations such as Autism Speaks and QSAC (Quality Services For The Autism Community).

Nicole Johnson seeks to call attention to the fascinating abilities of autistic individuals and demonstrate that autism is not something to be afraid of, but something to be inspired by. The movement piece is being performed by dancers from Canada, Bolivia, Spain, France and the US. All of these dancers were selected from Broadway Dance Center's Training Program. This international group of dancers are launching Autism Awareness Month in a way unlike any other dance company.

'Grant's Safari' March 31st at 7:00 P.M. Professional Performing Arts School 328 West 48th St New York, NY $20.00 Admission

MOVEATHON in Washington Square Park

MOVEATHON, Enforced Arch

Mover, Nicole Johnson is an extraordinary individual! This past weekend she organized a successful MOVETHON that had more than 20 dancers in participation and an audience of more than 200 passersby, not to mention the additional viewers that tuned in online! What a spectacular experience!

MOVEATHON, Enforced Arch, M.O.V.E.

This event was no ordinary event, their efforts create awareness and raise funds in support of rural Cambodia. If you haven’t heard of her organization, Javanna Productions, it is a student driven non-profit organization which presents a yearly effort entitled M.O.V.E (Motivation Opportunity Vision Entertainment).  In this effort, preteens, teenagers and young adults are encouraged to be productive, creative and develop a stronger sense of community within their neighborhoods while raising funds for a cause. This year’s effort is titled M.O.V.E for Cambodia. They are working with the Bernie Krisher Rural School Project Foundation to build a school in Cambodia. This project is inspired by Sheryl WuDunn’s and Nicholas Kristof’s novel “Half The Sky”, a moving novel about women turning oppression into opportunity.  The accounts and stories of young people described in this book inspired this team of M.O.V.E. representatives to get a move on.

Please, Don't Touch LIVE

Please, Don't Touch, Enforced Arch, James Koroni 'Please, Don't Touch,' depicts the unfortunate lives of animals caught up in the skin trade. With this performance piece we become a voice for the voiceless and tell their story. 'Please, Don't Touch' focuses energy on a topic that sits at the intersection of social justice, ecology and design. Our ultimate goal is to to become effective conduits for empathy and creative tools for change. Through the use of live performance, transmedia and personal interaction, this project will impact the heavily guarded perceptions of fur iconography by shedding light on what isn't revealed behind the glitz and glamor.

MOVEATHON

Help them as they begin to use their craft to create opportunities for children all over the world. By donating to Javanna Productions M.O.V.E. for Cambodia, you will contribute to making a difference in someone's life , in your own life, in your community, in your city, in your state, in this nation, and in this world. They hold at least one event a month; spoken word nights, musical theater comedy sketches, open mic nights, choreography showcases, visual art galleries, parties, classes, workshops, etc.  In order to get on the road to Cambodia and reach their ultimate goal of $20,000, they need financial support to rent studios, theaters, event spaces and meet their technical support and transportation needs.

This  year's effort requires the members to learn about East Asian culture post regime. With that knowledge, they are encouraged to use their craft to raise funds for the school in Cambodia and awareness for the cause. The members are sympathetic, reverent, understanding young citizens of a global community and continue to gain a greater awareness and respect of the world with each artistic experience. In addition to donating to the school abroad, you are donating to the empowerment of a large community of artistic kids in New York City.  Any donation, big or small is greatly appreciated. Their generation can make a difference in the way we give back to our communities on both a global and national scale, but they need your help in doing so.

Occupy Grand Army Plaza

Occupy Grand Army Plaza, Enforced Arch
Art by C.Martinez

Enforced Arch community is pleased to introduce you to Kathleen Stansell! Her effort entitled Occupy Grand Army Plaza is part of her company "Move for Change." She invites the dance community and supporters of this Movement to use their voices to support Occupy Wall St.

A statement from Kathleen Stansell:

Kathleen StansellMany have been saying, "Those people at Occupy Wall Street don't know what they stand for," which is just not true! If you ask anyone at Zuccotti Park, they'll tell you exactly why they're there. To save you the time and trip, I'll tell you. Occupy Wall Street is a movement inspired by our unjust and selfish government. Yes the banks are at fault. Yes the politicians are at fault. Yes greed is to blame. There are many to blame. But the truth is WE THE PEOPLE allowed this to happen. We accepted, for whatever reason, everything that's happened and has been happening. So first, the change must happen within ourselves. We must fight greed within ourselves. I ask myself, "Do I need that iPod or do I need to buy the food that is more expensive but better for my health? The LATTER! Do I need that extra pair of shoes, or do I need to donate that $60 to a homeless shelter." Occupy Wall Street is about standing together, in solidarity to help the people who live with us, next to us, far away from us, and everywhere. So please, if you don't help me, help that homeless shelter. If you don't help me, help companies like Reciprocity. If you don't help me, help yourself.

Please join us this Saturday at Grand Army Plaza, enjoy the performances and make donations for Occupy Wall Street in the form of food, clothing, blankets, hand warmers, warm clothing, first aid supplies, literature-both books and OWS literature such as information about credit unions, etc. Details:

Carly Fox Horton, Tracey Katof, James Koroni, Enforced Arch After a 6 hour flight from New York City, Carly Fox Horton & Tracey Katof joined me in Paris! Although it was a Red-eye flight, they felt excited to explore the city. Our dear friend, Celine Orang from Creadanse donated space for us to rehearse in later that evening so we left a little early to do some sightseeing! Fortunately our apartment at The Gentle Gourmet is in a beautiful neighborhood just minutes from L'Arc De Triumph so we popped over to snap a photo!

After we finished up there, it took just under an hour to arrive to the space where Celine greeted us. After two hours of rehearsal we felt plenty prepared to perform the following night at La Bellevilloise for Vegan Paris Day!

Grand Palais, Enforced Arch At the Grand Palais I stood in a line along with a Grand Palais, Enforced Archthousand excited Parisians to enter and experience an evening of flash mobs, cultural dancing, free gifts and all at no entry fee! How is this possible? Never have I seen anything like it! In line I could have lifted my feet and floated along with the crowd into this event. I'm not kidding! Once inside I was given an umbrella and a T-shirt with a babies body on it! There really is no other way to describe the space other than a Grand Palace with a central dome and two vast wings that were completely open space, free from obstruction. The architecture was breathtaking with two staircases at the opposite end from the entrance. As you look up you're reduced to the ant you are. In that moment I lost and gained an equivalent amount of inspiration and desolation. Then my eyes reconnected with the presentations!

la fete de la danse

First of all there was 300 people at the main stage holding open umbrellas with the Baby T-shirt on, all participating in a follow my lead type of dance instruction.

Grand Palais, Enforced Arch Grand Palais, Enforced Arch

Now when I said cultural dance I was referring to classes. Only the classes weren't taught to you live. There were 12 foot LCD screens lifted 5 feet from the ground with a repeating video with a master of each dance form helping you through the basics of each style. You could find anything from Ballet, Contemporary, Capoeira, Belly Dance, LA style(haha),  African, Hip Hop, Buchaechum, Bollywood, etc.
